PhD position in cosmogenic nuclide research in the Earth Surface Dynamics Group:

Quantifying patterns and timing of glacial erosion into bedrock in the Alps

Project:
Although glacial trough and shoulder shaping, production of relief, and limits to overall topography of the Alps are thought to be controlled by glacial erosion on hundreds of thousands of years timescales, relatively little is known about the rates and patterns in space of how such processes work. In this project we will take a step towards quantification of the fundamental process of subglacial erosion of bedrock by combining detailed understanding of site morphologic setting based on field mapping and DEM analyses, with bedrock cosmogenic nuclide determinations and cosmogenic nuclide modelling. There will also be a focus on dating at specific sites, obtained exposure ages will contribute significantly to the understanding of the timing of deglaciation and subsequent glacier variations in the Alps.

Requirements:
Applicants should hold a diploma or Master's degree in Earth Sciences (Geography, Geology, Geochemistry). As the project encompasses a strong component of modelling of nuclide behavior with time and depth into rock, a familiarity with MATLAB would be beneficial. A commitment to fieldwork, labwork and cosmogenic nuclide modelling is expected.

We offer:
The PhD student will divide their time between the Ion Beam Physics (AMS) group, the Isotope Geology group and the Earth Surface Processes group, all of ETH Zürich. This affords the PhD student with an opportunity to interact
on a daily basis in the stimulating atmosphere of research groups that lie at the forefront of their fields. Laboratory facilities are excellent; several (accelerator and other) mass spectrometers are available for this work.

Your application:
Applicants should submit
1) a curriculum vitae,
2) transcripts of university studies,
3) a statement of research interests and
4) contact details of two people who we may ask to provide a reference.

For questions or application submission please contact:
PD Dr. Susan Ivy-Ochs ( Este endereço de e-mail está protegido contra spam bots, pelo que o JavaScript terá de estar activado para que possa visualizar o endereço de e-mail ).

Deadline for applications: May 15, 2011.
The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (3 years).
To allow fieldwork in summer 2011 we will fill the position as soon as possible.
