Physicist / Geophysicist - Sea Ice Physics

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

Background: ICEBell is a UK NERC-funded programme partnering researchers at BAS and the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) to investigate sea ice thickness and snow depth distribution and processes in the Bellingshausen Sea, Antarctica. This includes AUV multibeam sonar surveys of the ice underside during a 30-day dedicated cruise aboard the RRS James Clark Ross, and contemporaneous airborne lidar surveys of the ice surface. This project involves a variety of national and international partners including researchers at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Danish Technical University, University of Manitoba and University of Texas San Antonio.

We seek a postdoctoral researcher to characterise the three-dimensional snow and ice thickness distribution and assist in the development of algorithms for sea ice thickness retrieval from satellite altimeters. Ideally, you will have experience in sea ice geophysics and analysing large spatial datasets. Experience in analysis of lidar and/or multibeam sonar data would be an asset. You will work closely with project partners, potentially on a variety of related projects.

Qualifications: PhD or equivalent in Geophysics, Oceanography or closely related field.

Duration: 2-year fixed term

Salary: Salary will be in the range of ?26,180 to ?29,410 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a defined salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave.
