The Geophysical Institute at the University of Bergen invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in physical oceanography to work with the "Faroe Bank Channel Overflow: Dynamics and Mixing" project. The position is for two years and will be based in Bergen, Norway.
The successful candidate will investigate the role of internal waves, mesoscale eddies, and transverse circulation on entrainment and mixing of the dense overflow plume downstream of the Faroe Bank Channel. The research will be based on observations from a ship survey, underwater gliders, and moored instruments. The research requires extensive analysis of data from common modern shipboard and moored oceanographic instrumentation as well as microstructure measurement systems including those installed on gliders and moorings.
Applicants must have achieved a PhD or equivalent education in physical oceanography, physics, applied mathematics, or related disciplines, or have presented the dissertation for assessment by the closing date for the application. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of ocean mixing processes; a good, relevant publication record; strong programming skills; and experience in microstructure measurement systems and turbulence data processing. Experience with glider deployment and glider data analysis is an asset.
Application Deadline: Tuesday, 1 March 2011.
