* Climate models represent the tool of choice to better understand constraints and mechanisms at work in past and future climate change. Information they provide at the global scale for the end of the 21st century may be considered as reasonably reliable. However, major difficulties remain in predicting changes in temperature and other climate parameters at the sub-continental scale. It is now necessary to produce an improved generation of regional climate change projections for input into impact/adaptation studies and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) assessments reports. This is the main objective of the COrdinated Regional climate Downscaling EXperiment (CORDEX ) of the World Climate Research Programme. Presently, the Université catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL) is part of the Climate Limited-area Modelling community (CLM ) and works with the COSMO model in climate mode within national and international research programmes. Building up on this potential, it is seeking to raise funds so as to strengthen its research in regional climate change modelling. This will be a two-stage procedure. First, candidates are invited to submit an expression of interest (EoI) by e-mail to the President of UCL's Research Council (

) by April 30, 2011 at the very latest. This EoI will include a detailed CV, three academic references and a five-page innovative research project in the field of regional climate change modelling. Then, the University will select a candidate and request her/him to help in drafting a complete proposal to be submitted to a major company foundation by the end of 2011. Should this be successful, she/he will be offered a tenured academic position at UCL.
Candidates should have a PhD in climate modelling, a deep knowledge of atmospheric dynamics/physics and a long experience in atmospheric modelling in order to be able to understand/predict regional changes in atmospheric circulation, precipitation and temperature, as well as the frequency and intensity of extreme atmospheric events (storms, heat waves, intense cold spells or episodes of heavy rainfall). The ability and desire to interact with the team working with the COSMO model in climate mode and with the team developing SLIM would be an advantage, in that some of the concepts underlying SLIM might be of use for resolution enhancement where and when needed.
The person to be hired will also participate in the teaching of meteorology and climatology at the regional scale in UCL's Master in physical sciences and Master in geographical sciences. In addition, she/he will contribute to the training of PhD students in climatology by means of several courses and seminars organised as part of the UNITER Doctoral School (Sciences of the universe, space, Earth and climate).
