The Glaciology department of the *Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI)* in Bremerhaven (Germany) is seeking for a highly motivated PhD student in a project *"modelling air enclosure in polar ice cores"*.

The candidate will start developing an improved model for dating air inclusions of polar ice cores based on structural data. The position includes experimental work with a newly developed ice-core-X-ray computer tomograph, digital image analysis and numerical modelling.

We offer a position within a dynamic and active group working on current topics of paleoclimate research from polar ice cores.  We provide an excellent infrastructure to study processes in ice on the micro scale.

We are searching for a highly motivated candidate having an diploma or master degree in physics, geophysics, computer science, or other related fields. We expect a strong interest in Glaciology and great enthusiasm for scientific work.

 The position is limited to three years, salary group 13/2 TV?D. A salary increase has been requested. Start of the PhD study should be in spring 2011.
