Mass balance of Antarctica from satellite remote sensing and regional climate modelling*
Fully funded 3 year PhD Studentship for UK/EU applicants available for March 2011.
Stipend is at the RCUK rate, currently ?13,590/annum. Tuition fees will be covered.
The School of Geographical Sciences invites applications for a 3 year, fully funded, PhD studentship to investigate the mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet using a combination of modelled estimates of snowfall from a regional climate model and observations of ice motion, ice thickness and surface elevation from a suite of satellite sensors including the recently launched CryoSat II and TanDEM-X missions alongside other satellite sensors. The project will involve the analysis and interpretation of these data sets using existing and, to be developed, software and methods.
We are seeking applicants with a good degree in a quantitative science (e.g. physics, geophysics, physical geography, electrical engineering, computer science) with an interest in applying their expertise to an important problem in glaciological/climate change research. The post offers the opportunity for working in an exciting area of Antarctic research with an international team of scientists from the US, Netherlands, Germany and the UK. The studentship will be based in the Bristol Glaciology Centre (http://www.bris.ac.uk/geography/research/bgc) and will contribute to an EU funded project involving 25 international partner institutes.
