Centre for Ice, Climate and Ecosystems (ICE) at the Norwegian Polar Institute invites applications for a 4-year postdoctoral position as researcher/post doc in marine biology within the research field of marine algae (ice algae/phytoplankton) and primary production.
Work description
The goal of the Flagship “ICE-ecosystems” is to study effects of changes in oceanographic conditions, ice extent and morphology on ice-associated ecosystems. Projects linked to this position will be conducted in icy waters around Svalbard and in the Arctic Ocean. The applicant should have competence on measurements of algal biomass (chlorophyll-a), primary production, light, nutrients, possibly sedimentation, and possess knowledge in ecology, taxonomy and physiology of marine algae.
Scientific challenges will be, for instance, to answer how changing ice conditions affect primary production, bloom timing, and composition/distribution of ice algae and phytoplankton. The consequence of such changes for the ice-associated ecosystem will be a central theme. Modelling will also be part of the project in collaboration with researchers experienced in modelling. Cruise and field work activities will be conducted in the Svalbard area. It is also possible to conduct laboratory experimental work (in Ny-Ålesund). Within the field of research of marine algae it is expected that the candidate will be able to provide advice to Environmental Management.
Qualifications
The applicant should have formal competence as Ph.D. or equivalent. For field work on ice algae, it would be an asset if the applicant has qualifications as scientific diver. It is also advantageous to possess competence in statistics and modelling, particularly with regard to production models for marine ecosystems.
Salary
The salary will commensurate with the qualifications of the successful candidate, according to the Norwegian State salary code 1109, scale 57 – 60 (NOK 435.500 – 459.900). The work place is the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø, Norway. The position is open, and the successful candidate should be able to start as soon as possible.
