SCAR/AGCS Antarctic Sea Ice Workshop II,
May 30th 2010
Tromso Norway
At the venue of the International Glaciological Society’s Conference on Sea Ice in Tromso Norway,(31 May to 4 June 2010) we are holding the Antarctic Sea Ice Workshop II, following the first workshop held in Barga Italy in March 2009.
This workshop will be held in the afternoon of Sunday May 30th, prior to the first day of the conference on Monday, May 31st . The first workshop had as its main purpose to review the results of IPY cruises to the Antarctic sea ice zone and to develop collaborations on joint papers on field results, modeling and remote sensing. Many of these efforts were prepared for papers now currently under editing and revision for publication in a joint issue of Deep Sea Research. Other results are being reported at the Sea Ice Conference in Tromso and will be published in the Glaciological Society’s publications.
The focus of the second workshop will be to review and coordinate upcoming activities planned over the next three years on Antarctic sea ice. Sessions will be organized, depending on attendees, covering these plans, with short presentations (or posters), on:
Antarctic sea ice zone cruises and buoy deployments
IceBELL 2010
Oden 2010
Aurora Australis 2011
Other Cruises planned or those proposed for 2012 and 2013
Remote Sensing of Antarctic sea ice
Cryosat Analyses
Active and Passive Microwave
NASA IceBridge Airborne Lidar Flights, 2009-2013
BAS Airborne Lidar Flights, IceBELL 2010
Modeling
SOPHOCLES Activities--Large-scale and Coupled modeling
Snow Ice Formation
Percolation and Fluid Transport in Antarctic Sea Ice
Reanalysis Data sets for Model Forcing and Validation
Biology and Biogeochemistry
Measurements and Modeling of CO2 Exchange
DMS, Halogens, Trace Gases
Nutrient Fluxes and Biological Growth in Sea Ice

your intention to attend the workshop and whether you would be interested in presenting on these future plans, or have suggestions for alternative topics. Final schedule and agenda will be sent out when these contributions have been received. During the week of the Conference, it is expected that smaller groups of participants will continue to meet informally to discuss and coordinate their specific plans. There will no registration fee for the workshop, however, a small charge may be made for refreshments.
