The International and Interdisciplinary IPY Field School that was successfully executed at The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) in 2009, will be held again in June/July 2010 – and also in the summer of 2011. This has been made possible due to extra funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to UArctic, IPY Norway and UNIS.

APECS is again an important contributor in the execution and organizing of this IPY Field School in Svalbard.

Last year gave an enormous amount of applications, almost 300! Directed towards undergraduate and early masters students, this is truly a unique opportunity. We hope to see somewhat the same numbers again this year!

This IPY Field School has a low registration fee, and there are some travel grants available for those that need financial assistance for travelling to Svalbard. Also, this Field School has become a true legacy of IPY as the teaching is heavily centered on the research being done during IPY 2007-2008.

Do also note that a presentation of the 2009 IPY Field School will be given at the Oslo IPY conference in June at the T6-3 session.
Learning about the Arctic and the Antarctic and how to do Field Work in the Polar areas, while actually being there, is a great way of grasping knowledge.
