Open 3-year Post doc position
23-Feb-2010

The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) in Tromsø, Norway, invites applications for a 3-years Post Doc position working on two projects

Long range Transport of black carbon and the effect on Snow albedo in north-east China and in the Arctic” and

Arctic Earth Observation and Surveillance Technologies”.

Work content
The successful applicant is expected to mainly focus the work around two existing projects with the common goal of understanding transport and fate of black carbon, and ultimately its optical and climate impact on the Polar environment. As for many other species found in the Polar regions, black carbon is present in minute amounts, but due to non-liner processes, optical interactions with snow, ice, and clouds its effect are enhanced in the high albedo environment.

One of the tasks for this position is to carry out and interpret spectral albedo measurements along with intermittent observations of black carbon concentrations in surface snow. This is currently conducted at two sites; Changbai in north east China and Ny-Ålesund at Svalbard.  Together with several Chinese and Norwegian partners we aim to link the long range transport of black carbon to the Arctic with both the regional and local radiative effects caused by the light absorbing particles. In order to know the vertical distribution of black carbon in the atmosphere, it is important to understand the transport mechanisms, possible impact on clouds, and hence the net radiative effect by black carbon. The second task is to develop and/or improve a small, cheap black carbon instrument suitable for platforms such as UAV’s (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) or balloons. The candidate will be expected to participate in travel and field work both in the Arctic and in China.

Qualifications
The successful candidate should have a Ph.D covering a relevant topic to the work content described above. We are looking for a candidate with experience of optical and microphysical processes of snow and aerosols. Experience with radiative transfer modeling is an advantage. The person should be able to work independently in a laboratory environment. In addition, we want a person with field experience. We are seeking a candidate who is a team worker yet can conduct independent research, and which will publish in international journals.

Salary
The salary will commensurate with the qualifications of the successful candidate, according to the Norwegian State salary code 1109, scale 57 – 60 (NOK 438.700 – 463.000). The work place is the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø, Norway. The position is open, and the successful candidate should be able to start as soon as possible.

General
The Norwegian State Administration strives to mirror the diversity of its population and thereby achieve a balanced mix of age, gender and ethnic backgrounds among its employees. Hence, candidates with immigrant backgrounds and women are encouraged to apply for the position.
