Geophysicist/Ice Radar Data Analyst - 2yr post-doc
11-Jan-2010

Post-doctoral research opportunity:
Antarctica and Global Change Analyst - Modelling Antarctic Peninsula Ice-Sheet

Your job will be to develop automatic interpretation of ice-radar returns and prepare a data-set of processed radar returns from Antarctica; to use these to construct images of ice-sheet internal structure; to use these data with in-house flow models to understand ice flow variations; and to prepare data-sets for use in Ice2Sea modelling exercises.

The position is partly funded by the ice2sea programme, which has has €10M of funding from the EU Framework 7 (FP7) for four years of research (2009-2013). The 24 institutional partners in ice2sea will work together to quantify the contribution of continental ice to sea-level rise over the next 200 years.
We will do this through an integrated programme that includes:
♦ targeted studies of key processes in mountain glacier systems and ice caps (e.g. Svalbard, Patagonia), and in ice sheets in both polar regions (Greenland and Antarctica);
♦ improved satellite determinations of changes in continental ice mass;
♦ development and implementation of ice-sheet/glacier models to generate detailed projections of the contribution of continental ice to sea-level rise over the next 200 years. Ice2sea will deliver these results in forms accessible to scientists, policy-makers and the general public, which will include clear presentations of the sources of uncertainty. In addition, you will be analysing radar returns from the ice above Sub-glacial Lake Ellsworth, where a large consortium of UK plans have secured funding to drill through to this lake to access the lake.
