Scientist/Postdoc MPI-M
11-Jan-2010

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M, www.mpimet.mpg.de) conducts fundamental research focusing on climate related problems. The institute is situated in an at-tractive downtown area of Hamburg, Germany, and provides a highly stimulating international scientific environment. Within the EU funded research proposal COMBINE an ice sheet model for the northern hemisphere will be coupled with the earth system model of the MPI. We offer 1 PostDoc Position: Coupling of an Ice Sheet Model to an Earth System Model (SAS2010-01).

The successful applicant will adapt an existing coupling scheme and perform anthropogenic climate change simulations with the resulting model. This work will be done in close cooperation with an existing working group. The experiments will be analyzed and the feedbacks between the ice sheet and the other climate components will be investigated. The simulations will be performed on the new IBM Power6 at the DKRZ (http://www.dkrz.de/dkrz/about/hardware/HPC_Cluster). The ability to work efficiently in a team is regarded as essential.  For further information, please contact Este endereço de e-mail está protegido contra spam bots, pelo que o JavaScript terá de estar activado para que possa visualizar o endereço de e-mail

A Ph.D. and experience in climate research and/or cryospheric science are required. Experience in working with complex models, in analyzes of large climate data sets are necessary. Good programming skills (especially FORTRAN95) and experience with parallel computing are of advantage.

The appointment is for two years. Starting date is March, 1st 2010 or later. Payment and social security benefits are according to a civil service position (TVoeD E 13). The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.
