Snow scientist at NVE in Oslo, Norway

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) is under the auspices of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. NVE is Norway’s national centre of expertise for hydrology and plays a central role in organising contingency measures against avalanches, floods and other related emergencies, and is in charge of maintaining power supplies under emergency conditions nationwide. NVE participates in research projects and focuses on maintaining high quality data and skills in order to ensure consistent and environmentally sound management of water resources. NVE's Hydrology Department employs about 110 organised in seven Sections and is the National Hydrological Service of Norway. The successful applicant will be engaged as a scientist at the Section for Glaciers, Ice and Snow in the Hydrology Department. The Section has 13 employees and collects and manages long time-series of data on glaciers, snow and river- and lake-ice in Norway. We focus on the role of the cryosphere in areas such as climate change and its consequences, floods, droughts, avalanches and energy production.

You will carry out research and development on snow modelling and analysis of snow data with respect to flood forecasting, avalanche forecasting, effects of climate change. You will contribute to the improvement of spatially distributed snow data for Norway and the web site http://seNorge.no, in collaboration with the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

We are looking for someone with:

    * Relevant experience and higher academic education, preferably at the doctoral level in a physical science, mathematics or earth science.
    * Knowledge and experience in several of the following areas is required: snow physics, snow modelling, numerical and statistical modelling, programming, remote sensing, field work and analysis of spatially-distributed data

Personal qualifications:

    * You are analytical and motivated to work on snow-related issues.
    * You will collaborate with many other disciplines and applications, so the ability to cooperate is very important.
    * You can manage your own time effectively and enjoy working as part of a small team.
    * A demonstrated ability to produce good quality presentations and scientific publications is desirable.
    * The working language is Norwegian and fluency in Norwegian, or the ability and motivation to quickly obtain the required Norwegian communication skills, is important.

The position is based in Oslo. We offer a competent and active working environment with varied and exciting work.

The salary is according to government salary levels, and the position will be filled at salary level range 57-62, corresponding to an annual salary of NOK 438.... Higher salary levels may be considered in case of special qualifications. Pension contribution is deducted according to exciting regulations.
