Numerical Modeller for Ice-sheet Forecasting
£26,180 - £29,410 pa; Fixed-term 3 year contract
About BAS
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.
The Role
Part of the EU Ice2Sea project, you’ll work on and perform simulations, predicting the contribution and the behaviour of the Antarctic ice sheet throughout the 21st Century, using existing BAS software.
Focusing specifically on ice-sheet volume using satellite and field data with in-house models, you’ll assist in the preparation of data sets, papers and presentations. You’ll also analyse model output and comparison with independent observations for model validation, diagnosis of model errors, and model improvement.
The breadth of experience you'll gain in this role will equip you to develop into an all-round ice-sheet modeller and glaciologist.
Key Requirements
With a degree and potentially a PhD in a physical, mathematics or earth science, you’ll bring knowledge of programming and data visualisation to the role, together with Windows and Unix operating systems. The ability to understand and program mathematical equations will be key, as will good time management skills and strong team working capabilities.
