Geophysicist/Ice Radar Data Analyst
£26,180 - £29,410 pa; Fixed-term 2 year contract
About BAS
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.
The Role
Responsible for the development of BAS radar layer analysis capability, you'll play a key role in providing data which informs about how ice-sheets and the earth system have behaved in the past.
Testing in-house routines for automatic radar layer mapping and analysing radar returns, you'll use them to construct images of ice-sheet internal structure, to understand ice flow variations and prepare data sets for use in Ice2Sea modelling exercises. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to run the in-house models to predict radar layer geometry or develop new ways of understanding ice penetrating radar surveys.
Key Requirements
Educated to PhD Level in Physical Sciences/Engineering, you’ll need to be fluent in written and spoken English, as well as with different software. This will include the ability to programme, run and transfer data between different software. As well as significant experience of analysing the operation of natural or physical systems, you’ll also bring strong numeracy skills.
