Faculty Positions in Global Change and Earth System Science
Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China
Brief introduction of the college:
On January 19, 2008, relying on integrated, crossed and systematic multi-disciplinary advantages, on the basis of the original School of Geography and Remote Sensing Science, School of Environment, School of Resources, College of Water Science and College of Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management, the university established "College of Global Change and Earth System Science". With State Key Laboratory of Earth Surface Processes and Resource Ecology, State Key Laboratory of Remote Sensing Science, State Key Laboratory of Water Environment Simulation, High-performance Scientific Computing Center, and a number of key laboratories at ministry (city) level and engineering centers as support platform, at the same time, through establishing innovation teams in cooperation with high level scientific research institutions and scientists at home and abroad, the college forms a research and teaching group with a world-class level and cultivates multi-disciplinary crossed research and application talents with innovation abilities.
The mission of the college is to consider the characteristics of current Earth science development highlighting disciplinary cross and minding comprehensive research, with the Earth system mode and the key scientific issues research as basis, global change integrated observation data platform as support, interference mechanism of human activities and global change as bond and the global change economics as the key breakthrough direction, in line with the requirements of China's national economic and social development on Earth science, to strengthen ability in forecasting global and regional climate and environmental change, with national economy service as the goal, effectively carry out integrated research on global change and Earth system science and build into a world-class scientific research center and innovation talents cultivation base.
Faculty Positions in Global Change and Earth System Science
Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China
The college is expected to produce excellence in education and research and deliver results of direct relevance to policy makers and the public. The college is recruiting faculty members at various levels specializing on human-earth system interactions, earth system modeling, earth observation, and global change economics. The university has allocated support for the establishment of ten research teams with each team composing a chief scientist supported by two senior and two junior faculty members. Interested scientists are encouraged to apply either jointly as a team or individually. To date, four chief scientists have been appointed in land surface processes, data assimilation, cryosphere and paleoclimate, and water resources and hydrology. All these groups are seeking senior and junior level scientists. Additionally chief scientists and teams are needed on Earth System Model, high-performance computing for earth system modeling, carbon cycling science, atmospheric aerosols, remote sensing and data assimilation, socio-economic impact of global change and adaptation, and economic, social and environmental evaluation of climate mitigation policy. In the direction of Earth System Model, young scientists well-versed in developing ocean, atmospheric and land model are especially welcome.
A scientist at the chief scientist level must have an established international reputation in one of those research directions, proven research organization and leadership skills. A scientist at the senior scientist level is equivalent to a full professor at the university and must have a strong record of publications in world-class journals and have the potential of maintaining first-class scholarly productivity. Scientists at the assistant and associate professor levels must have demonstrated potential of independently carrying out cutting-edge research.
Full-time employment is 9 months per year while visiting positions should work at least 3 months each year in the college. We are also interested in flexible employment options for suitable chief scientists, additionally we offer Visiting fellows who must be leading scientists in his/her area of research and can complement the research activities in the college.
Initial appointment for full-time positions will be for a 3-5 year terms. At the end of the second year, there will be an initial review followed by a tenure review at the end of the fourth year.
