Post Doctoral Research Associate

Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences, Aberystwyth University

Salary Range £24,877 -£29,704

The Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences seeks to appoint a suitably qualified PDRA to work on a 3-year NERC-funded project entitled “Glacial history of the NE Antarctic Peninsula region over centennial to millennial timescales”. The aim of this project is to reconstruct the glacial history of the NE Antarctic Peninsula region over these timescales, including evidence for former ice-shelf collapse events in the onshore geomorphological and sedimentological signature, together with the dynamic response of feeder glaciers. Using the terrestrial record, the project will focus on three important region-wide scientific issues: (i) the timing and style of post-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) retreat along the eastern margin of the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet; (ii) the long-term response of tributary glaciers to previous ice-shelf collapse events; and (iii) the recent changes in Antarctic Peninsula ice shelves and tributary glaciers.

The successful applicant will have experience of using GIS and remote sensing data-sets (aerial photograph and satellite image analysis, DEM production) to interpret glaciological and glacial geomorphological features, as well as field experience of glaciology, glacial geomorphology or sedimentology. You will join a team conducting fieldwork on the Antarctic Peninsula in January 2011, and will work on the samples collected in the field and the ensuing data-sets. You will also be expected to take responsibility for paper and report writing, as well as making conference presentations and undertaking other outreach activities.

You will have, or be close to submitting, a PhD in a relevant discipline, have prior experience of polar or alpine fieldwork (including glaciology or glacial geomorphology) and be competent in GIS and remote sensing. You should be willing to operate within a small team from remote field camps under arduous weather conditions in Antarctica. You will be organized and be willing to acquire new skills as needed.
