Postdoctoral Research Officer in Geophysics/Glaciology
14-Oct-2009

Swansea University

School of the Environment and Society

Fixed Term Postdoctoral Research Officer in Geophysics/Glaciology

Salary scale: £30,594 to £33,432 per annum (pro-rata if part time).

Applications are invited for the position of Fixed Term Postdoctoral Research Officer, reference 5251, in Geophysics/Glaciology shared between Swansea (School of The Environment and Society; Advisor: Dr. Bernd Kulessa) and Aberystwyth (Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences; Advisor: Dr. Alun Hubbard) Universities, reference BK/RGC09/PDRA. The research work to be undertaken will focus primarily on the acquisition of passive seismic data on the Greenland Ice Sheet, together with the processing and forward and / or inverse modelling of the data sets acquired. The research work is funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (gotw.nerc.ac.uk/list_full.asp?pcode=NE%2FG005796%2F1).

The specific duties and responsibilities include the acquisition of passive seismic data in the Russell Glacier Catchment on the Greenland Ice Sheet, together with the logistical planning and execution of all fieldwork related activities. They also include the processing of all data sets acquired, together with appropriate forward and / or inverse geophysical modelling and data interpretation. The research officer is expected to write and publish several research papers, particularly for refereed journals, and present several scientific talks or posters at major international conferences. The research officer will be encouraged to undertake an extended visit to the Department of Geosciences at Pennsylvania State University (an affiliated scientific partner; Advisor: Prof. Sridhar Anandakrishnan).

Candidates should hold a PhD in Geophysics or an equivalent science or engineering discipline, completed by 1st March 2010, and should have appropriate, demonstrable experience in collecting and processing of field geophysical data. Candidates should be able to demonstrate significant independence of focus and direction in research (i.e. determining ’what, why, when and with whom') to progress work, and to manage their own research and administrative activities to meet deadlines. Candidates should have a publication record commensurate with career stage. Preference may be given to candidates that are familiar with the principles and application of forward and / or inverse modelling of geophysical (and ideally passive seismic) data, and those that have experience with the logistical planning and execution of geophysical surveys in remote environments. Good communication and interpersonal skills may also be an advantage.

The Glaciology Group at Swansea University is a rapidly growing focus for cryospheric research with an emphasis on assessing the impact of climatic forcing of the world’s ice masses using integrated modelling, remote sensing, and field geophysical strategies. The group currently has some 25 members.
