The Marine Geology Section at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, offers a position for a Post-Doc Organic Geochemistry for paleoenvironmental studies in the Chilean Fjord regio
Division: Geosciences
Scientist (salary group TV-L 13) within the framework of the research project HOLOPARC “The Southern Westerlies during the Holocene: Paleoenvironmental Reconstructions from Chilean lake, fjord, and marine sediments combined with climate modelling”.
HOLOPARC is a joint project between the AWI Bremerhaven, the University of Bremen, and the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam funded within the DFG Priority Programme “Interdynamik”. The project involves a multi-proxy approach based on sedimentological and novel organic proxies to reconstruct multidecadal-to-millennial-scale changes in temperature, vegetation, and humidity in southern Chile during the Holocene. These proxy results will be combined with transient climate model sensitivity experiments in order to elucidate a potential forcing mechanism (ongoing PhD project at the University of Bremen)
The Postdoctoral researcher will focus on in-depth analyses of the organic compounds in fjord and lake sediment cores applying a number of organic-geochemical proxies (e.g., TEX86, MBT/CBT, hydrogen isotope measurements of plant-wax lipids and on alkenones). Previous work on a biomarker core-top calibration in the study area showed very promising results for the application in sediment cores.
Requirements: The successful candidate should hold a PhD in geosciences with a focus on geochemistry. Laboratory experience in organic geochemistry and previous expertise in paleoclimatology and paleoceanography would be a strong advantage. We expect excellent English language skills and the ability to publish in international science journals.

AWI aims at an increase of the number of women in the scientific staff and therefore encourages women to apply.
Severely disabled applicants with essentially identical technical and personal suitability will be preferentially selected, please see our notification on our homepage under job offers / jobs.
AWI supports the combination of job and family. It offers nursery places at its Bremerhaven site.
