Modeling of the triple isotopic composition of the air in an Earth System Model of Intermediate Complexity: understanding glacial – interglacial climate – biosphere – water cycle interaction. Within the framework of the CITRONNIER project (the triple isotopic composition of oxygen: new tracers for the evolution of the biosphere and water cycle), we seek to appoint a post-doc research fellow at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE), for a period of 18 months starting January, 2010. The main task of the appointee will be the development of the oxygen cycle and its isotopes in the Earth System model CLIMBER-2. The CITRONNIER project implements an innovative data—model approach in which a coupled climate model capable of simulating transient climate changes over glacial/interglacial cycles is used. The Earth System Model of Intermediate Complexity of concern (CLIMBER-2) includes three main components of the Earth System: atmosphere, ocean, and vegetation.
The successful candidate will implement the triple oxygen isotopic composition of O2 and use the existing triple oxygen isotopic composition of H2O in the model. He/she will conduct his/her research within the climate modeling group where the CLIMBER-2 model is routinely used. He/she will conduct a validation of the additional module incorporating the triple isotopic composition of the air. This will be done on timescales going from the recent past (enabling comparison with recent GCM simulations) to the last deglaciation. Upon validation, he/she will perform simulations at orbital timescales, in order to provide constraints for the data recovered within the CITRONNIER project.
LSCE has a long tradition of integrating data with models to better
understand climate and environment change. Using the latter approach for the CITRONNIER project, interaction between researchers from different fields is crucial.
Essential qualifications/skills:
- PhD in climate science or similar field
- ability to interact with researchers from different fields (data – model integration)
Desirable knowledge/skills:
- experience in setting up and running climate models
- some knowledge of forward proxy modeling would be appreciated
- some knowledge of climate change at orbital timescales
- basic knowledge, skills and experience to work in a UNIX environment
- basic Fortran coding abilities
The post-doc research fellow will work in the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement, France (http://www.lsce.ipsl.fr) with Didier Roche and Amaelle Landais as well as interact with other members of the « Climate modeling » and « Ice and continents, climates and stable isotopes » groups. The diversity of research disciplines at LSCE will provide a stimulating environment as well as opportunities for interaction both within and outside the CITRONNIER project.
