The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary center for Climate and Earth System research located in Hamburg, Germany. It provides a highly stimulating international scientific environment. The working language is English. We are seeking applicants for 1 PhD in Sea-Ice Research (SAS2009-24) for our research group “Sea ice in the Earth System”. We carry out fundamental research in the physics of sea ice and its interaction with the ocean and the atmosphere. The group develops implements and uses a next-generation sea-ice model both for climate studies and for conceptual studies of sea ice. We also work experimentally in the field and in the laboratory where we focus on new measuring techniques to better understand the physical properties of sea ice.
We are seeking one PhD student to evaluate new parameterizations of air-ice-sea interaction from theoretical and experimental studies. Possible research topics include, but are not limited to, the summer melt cycle, the frazil-pancake cycle and the modeling of snow on sea ice. A background in Physics, Mathematics, Geophysics, or a related subject is required. Some prior knowledge of sea-ice physics is of advantage.
The position is initially offered for three years, starting as soon as possible. Payment will be in accordance with a civil service position (50% TVöD E13), including extensive social security plans. Conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences, and those of the German civil service. The selection process for the position will start on 28 September 2008 and will continue until the position is filled.
