The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.
As part of our new research programme (Polar Science for Planet Earth) we seek a Physical Oceanographer to work in the Open Oceans workpackage of the Polar Oceans programme. The post holder will participate in research projects concerning the circulation and variability of the polar oceans and their role in large-scale climate, and will use a combination of field data and modelling to investigate these themes. Fieldwork in the Southern Ocean is envisaged. Prior experience of researching the polar environments will be an advantage.
The post holder will have a PhD (or equivalent) in a scientific or numerate discipline, and an established track record in the field of physical oceanography as evidenced by publications in international journals. They will also have the ability to write funding proposals and secure future research funds. It is envisaged that the post holder will contribute significantly to the future science directions of the Polar Oceans programme.
Main Purpose of Job:
To study circulation, mixing and dynamics in the Southern Ocean, with particular emphasis
on Drake Passage and the Scotia Sea, using a combination of observational data and
output from models.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate in research cruises to the Southern Ocean.
- Analyse physical oceanographic data from the Southern Ocean.
- Develop and apply inverse methods to aid interpretation of observational datasets.
- Analyse the results of forward models, including idealised and general circulation models, to
better understand Southern Ocean dynamics.
- Present research results in international refereed journals and present at conferences.
- Develop and submit grant proposals that enhance the Open Oceans research programme and open up new lines of enquiry
