Vacancy - The British Antarctic Survey - Dynamical Oceanographer /Work Package Manager

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

As part of our new research programme (Polar Science for Planet Earth) we seek a Dynamical Oceanographer to work in the Polar Oceans programme. The post holder must have an established track record in the field of dynamical oceanography and/or geophysical fluid dynamics, and the application of such techniques to the study of climate. They must have a PhD (or equivalent) in a scientific or numerate discipline, a proven track record of publication, and the ability to write funding proposals and secure future research funds. Experience of researching the polar environments will be an advantage, as will experience with analyses of numerical model output and data from remote sensing sources.

The post holder will also lead the Open Oceans workpackage within the Polar Oceans programme. They must therefore have strong interpersonal and leadership skills, and be able to successfully manage the science direction and output of a small team of scientists. They will also be required to manage effectively the science resource allocated to this workpackage.


Main Purpose of Job:

To manage the Open Oceans work package within the Polar Oceans programme and to
undertake personal research into the fluid dynamics of the Southern Ocean circulation and
its role in the climate system.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

-       Manage the science resource allocated to the Open Oceans work package.

-       Lead the science of the Open Oceans work package and drive its development, including
       leading national and international collaborations.

-       Conduct fundamental research on the fluid dynamics of Southern Ocean circulation and
       mixing, using theoretical approaches, models, remotely-sensed data and in situ data

-       Present research results in international refereed journals and in presentations at conference.

-       Lead the development and submission of grant proposals that enhance the Polar Oceans
       research programme and open up new avenues of research.

 

Salary will be in the range of £36,240 to £48,230 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a final salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave.
