The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.
Based within the Polar Oceans programme at our Cambridge office, you will be part of a small team investigating oceanographic variability in the Southern Ocean and the Arctic, and its impacts on the Earth System. Your function will be to provide engineering and technical support to both land- and ship-based field activities. You will assist with the design, construction and operation of a hot-water drilling system having the capability of penetrating floating ice shelves up to 1 km thick for the purpose of deploying oceanographic instrumentation in the seawater beneath. You will be involved in the design, construction and deployment of the sub-ice moorings as well as more conventional ship-deployed oceanographic moorings. Field work will require you to spend some summer seasons in the Antarctic, involving periods of absence from the UK of up to four months. Your duties while based in Cambridge will include report writing and management and maintenance of a stock of oceanographic instrumentation.
You will possess an HNC/HND or a first degree in a science or an engineering discipline.
