The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.
Your primary activities will be the development of methods for ice core analysis and the routine analysis of ice core samples in the framework of our palaeoclimate projects. You will be responsible for the ice chemistry laboratory and manage up to two members of laboratory staff. Processing ice cores in the cold laboratory will be part of your duties, as well as the supervision of short-term users of the laboratory facilities. You will contribute to the analysis and interpretation of the data and assist in the publication of the results in the scientific literature.
With a PhD in chemistry or physics (or equivalent), you have extensive analytical experience, including method development and programming in an application control software package (e.g. Labview). You have good numerical and IT skills and demonstrated efficient use of your time and resources. Your approach to Health and Safety issues is rigorous. You are able to manage staff and the chemistry laboratory effectively and enjoy working in a team of enthusiastic colleagues.
The post is based in Cambridge, UK and is open-ended. Salary will be in the range of £26,180 to £29,410 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a final salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave.
Main Purpose of Job
To develop new methods for the chemical analysis of Antarctic ice cores in accordance with requirements of scientific projects. Analyse ice core samples using both existing and newly developed methods. Contribute to the interpretation of the data and publication of the results in the scientific literature as appropriate.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1) Develop and implement new methods and techniques for ice core analysis.
2) Routine analysis of ice core samples.
3) Managing chemistry laboratory, maintenance of laboratory facilities.
4) Managing laboratory staff (1-2). Supervision of staff temporarily using the laboratory.
5) Assist with processing ice cores in the cold room (-20°C).
6) Contribute to data analysis and interpretation.
