Post Doctoral Position: Microbial Ecology of Frozen Worlds

A full-time, NASA- funded, postdoctoral position Astrobiology Institute

A full-time, NASA- funded, postdoctoral position is available to participate in a recently funded Astrobiology Institute (http://astrobiology.nasa.gov/nai/teams/can5/jpl-icy-worlds/) focusing on: (1) Habitability of liquid water environments in icy worlds; (2) Survivability of biological compounds under simulated icy world surface conditions, and (3) Detectability of life and biological materials on the surface of icy worlds. This project is based at JPL and consists of a team of 47 researchers and E/PO specialists representing 21 institutions in 11 different states, and 4 different countries. The successful applicant will be based at Montana State University, Bozeman in the laboratory of John Priscu (http://www.homepage.montana.edu/ ~lkbonney/). The project will include field and laboratory based research on the metabolic and phylogenetic diversity of prokaryotes associated with the coastal lagoons near Barrow, Alaska (http://www.arcticscience.org/).

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in microbiology, astrobiology, microbial ecology, or closely related field is required; experience with culturing, molecular phylogeny, microbial physiology is desired. Applicants must have strong quantitative skills, and be comfortable working independently and within a team environment.

Salary: $40,000/yr depending upon qualifications, plus Montana State University benefits. The position is available for 2 years.

Closing Date: July 31 2009. Review of applications will begin 1 August, 2009 with the position available to begin 1 January 2010.
