Investigation of high‐resolution chemical and biological records from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS)
A full-time, NSF- funded, postdoctoral position is available for a highly qualified individual to participate in the investigation of high‐resolution chemical and biological records from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide ice core. WAIS Divide is a U.S. deep ice coring project funded by NSF to collect a deep ice core from the flow divide in central West Antarctica in order to develop a unique series of interrelated climate, ice dynamics, and biologic records focused on understanding interactions among global Earth systems (see
http://www.waisdivide.unh.edu/about/).
This project is a collaboration between Drs. John Priscu and Christine Foreman at Montana State University, Drs. Joe McConnell and Ross Edwards at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, NV and Dr. Eric Saltzman at the University of California-Irvine. The applicant will be based at and employed by Montana State University but will travel to the Desert Research Institute on a regular basis to collect samples.
The successful applicant will utilize a deep UV laser, flow cytometer, and a 3- dimensional fluorometer to characterize dissolved and particular organic matter in ice cores extending from the Last Glacial Maximum to the early Holocene.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. in geochemistry, microbial ecology, environmental engineering, or closely related field is required; experience with optical measurements of biological compounds and/or paleoclimate research is desirable. Applicants must have strong quantitative skills, and be comfortable working independently and within a team environment. Prior experience working with ice cores is desirable, but not required.
Salary: $40,000-$44,000/yr depending upon qualifications, plus Montana State University benefits. The position is available for 3 years with continuation dependent upon performance and funding.
Closing Date: Review of applications will begin
1 August, 2009 with the position available to begin 1 January 2010.
Applications: Please send via email a cover letter stating your research accomplishments and interests, curriculum vitae, two representative publications, and the names and contact information for three references to: Dr. John Priscu,
