A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington, as part of a funded project to use the network of ice cores drilled under the US-ITASE (International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition) program to explore Antarctic climate variability and change over the last 200 - 2000 years. The focus of the project will be to apply statistical methods and GCM simulations of water isotopes in forward and inverse approaches to obtain quantitative reconstructions of temperature and atmospheric circulation. The successful candidate will ideally have experience with the use of general circulation models, but candidates with other relevant experience are also encouraged to apply. The work will be done under the joint supervision of Eric Steig (ice core paleoclimatology) and David Battisti (climate dynamics). The appointment will be made starting Sept 09 or as soon as possible thereafter. Initial term is for one year but with the possibility of extension for an additional two years. Candidates must have received a PHD within the past five years in a relevant field from an accredited college or University.
The candidate will join a growing group of researchers at the University of Washington working on paleoclimate problems from a modern climate dynamics perspective and will have opportunities to work with other faculty and students in Earth and Space Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, and the Program on Climate Change and the Quaternary Research Center.
Applicants should contact send a cover letter and curriculum vitae, and the names of three references to Professor Eric Steig:
