Postdoctoral researcher in melt modelling of debris-covered glaciers
Grade 7 : £28,839 - £31,513 (depending on experience)
Fixed-Term for 12 months

We seek to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to develop a numerical surface melt model for debris-covered glaciers to estimate melt water production under a warming climate.  This exciting position is funded as part of the European Commission 7th Framework Project ACQWA (Assessing Climate Change Impacts on the Quantity and Quality of Water; www.acqwa.ch) involving 37 partner institutions in 10 countries.
The postdoctoral researcher will be an important member of an International team assessing the vulnerability of water resources in mountain regions.  In addition to developing the numerical model in Dundee, you will be expected to: i) work closely with the glaciology group at ETH Zürich and climate modellers involved in ACQWA aiming to produce catchment-scale forecasts of glacial runoff at the 2050 and 2100 time horizons; ii) take responsibility for data management and assist in organisation of summer fieldwork in the European Alps; iii) assist the Dundee project co-ordinator in project management; iv) attend ACQWA project meetings in Europe.

We encourage applications from candidates with a PhD (or equivalent qualification) in Earth Science or a similar relevant discipline (applicants nearing completion of their PhDs are also welcome to apply).  You should have proven experience in numerical modelling using a suitable programming environment/language (e.g. Matlab, IDL, or Fortran) and preferably in ArcGIS. Knowledge of energy balance modelling and of debris-covered glaciers would be desirable, but not essential.  Given the nature of the duties, the post will require a candidate with strong research, organisational and communication skills.  International travel to attend short-term project meetings in Europe will be required.  The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to undertake fieldwork on alpine glaciers.
