Department of Geosciences
University of Oslo, Norway
Invite applications for a Ph.D. research fellowship on glacier modelling. Possible topics cover modelling of glacier mass balance, glacier dynamics or hydrology of glacierized catchments under changing climate conditions. The candidate will further develop existing routines and implement new ones to investigate the effects of climate change on glaciers and/or meltwater runoff. Acquisition of complementary data for model validation will be possible.
The employment in a 4-years position involves a teaching responsibility equivalent to 25% working time.
The Department of Geosciences is one of the largest Departments within geosciences in Norway, comprising stimulating internationally recognised work groups in e.g. tectonics, petroleum geology, hydrology, geomorphology/glaciology, geohazards and meteorology/ oceanography. More information about the department at
http://www.geo.uio.no. The candidate will be part of a lively research environment in cold regions sciences, in particular in glaciology, hydrology, remote sensing and geoinformatics. The position includes collaboration with a number of Norwegian and international partners. The project is funded by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo.
The successful candidate has a strong background and interest in modelling, preferentially in glaciology and /or hydrology. Experience in programming, using low level (e.g. Fortran, C++) or high level languages (e.g. MATLAB, Python or similar) is required. Knowledge of parameter optimization methods will be a benefit. Experience in conducting fieldwork is an asset.
Research fellowship applicants must hold a Master degree (or an equivalent level of education) in one of the Geosciences, Physics or a related discipline relevant for the described project. Applicants who will finish their master study within the near future can apply given that a date is set for their final exam.
Applications should be submitted following the guidelines given in:
