The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to study the impacts of melting glaciers and subsequent landscape development on watershed fluxes of water, carbon, and nutrients to the Gulf of Alaska on a project funded by the National Science Foundation.
The position is part of a multi-year project examining the hydrology and biogeochemistry of glacial rivers in southeastern Alaska that encompasses both field and laboratory experiments.
The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team that includes Dr. Eran Hood from the University of Alaska Southeast, Dr. Durelle Scott from Virginia Tech University (VT), a PhD student from Virginia Tech and several undergraduate research assistants from the University of Alaska Southeast.
The position will start in Fall 2009 (preferably October 1 – December 1). Funds are available for 2 years and the position will be funded jointly by the Environmental Science Program at the University of Alaska Southeast and the Biological Systems Engineering Department at Virginia Tech. The starting salary is approximately $42,000. The position will be based in Juneau, Alaska, with the opportunity to also spend a portion of the tenure at Virginia Tech.
Applicants with the following background and experience are encouraged to apply: a PhD in Engineering, Earth Science, Biology, Environmental Chemistry, or a related field with an emphasis in hydrology and/or biogeochemistry. Applicants that have previous field experience and a publication record are highly desirable. Expertise in dissolved organic matter (DOM) chemistry and characterization is highly desirable. Interest in teaching an undergraduate course at UAS is also encouraged.
