Open at the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research, Utrecht University (IMAU)
IMAU is looking for a motivated PhD candidate (m/f) to carry out a research project in the field of glacier modelling. The focus will be on the tidewater glaciers of Svalbard, with emphasis on the coupling of sliding, calving, meltwater input/hydraulics and sediment dynamics. Attention will be given to the quantification of the internal variability of glacier systems as compared to the more direct response to climatic forcing. Observational studies of these glaciers are currently carried out by different research groups in the framework of the IPY-GLACIODYN programme. Using acquired data sets to improve/calibrate glacier models is an essential part of the project. There is room for different approaches, ranging from simple quasi-analytical techniques to comprehensive numerical modelling.
