The University of Bristol’s Glaciology Group is a world leader in the field of numerical ice sheet modelling. The aim of the group is to provide realistic predictions of the future behaviour of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, and their response to on-going climate change. Many of the issues associated with the current generation of ice sheet models are created by the use of a single, fixed resolution grid over the entire ice sheet. Examples include the migration of grounding lines and the dynamics of ice streams. One method of overcoming this limitation is the implementation adaptive-mesh refinement (AMR) scheme.
We wish to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to implement AMR within an exiting higher-order ice flow model. The position is funded by a NERC standard grant which also involves partners at the Universities of Durham and Cambridge. Initially, funding will be for a period of two to two and a half years with salary in the range £29,704 - £33,432 depending on experience. Familiarity with the use of AMR will be a distinct advantage, as will proven expertise in the C++ programming language in particular object-orientated aspects such as the use of classes.
If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed term or a permanent contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research experience, in line with the University’s Fixed Term Contract Agreement. Further information can be found at
