Postdoctoral position in ice sheet modelling
29-Mar-2009
The Laboratoire de Glaciologie of the Universté Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is currently seeking to fill a postdoctoral research position in ice sheet modelling within the framework of the IceCube-Dyn project, funded by the Communauté Française de Belgique.

IceCube is a cubic kilometer large neutrino observatory under construction at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. IceCube is being constructed in deep Antarctic ice by deploying thousands of optical sensors at depths between 1,450 and 2,450 meters. The IIHE laboratory of the ULB is strongly involved in this project.

The IceCube setup offers also a unique opportunity to investigate ice sheet dynamics at high resolution, which has never been done before. IceCube surveys one cubic kilometer of ice to depths of more than 2500m, away from the ice divide where ice deformation and flow matter. Moreover, IceCube is close to a subglacial lake, emphasizing the importance of the interaction
with subglacial processes. Within IceCube it is planned to install additional inclinometers at depth to measure ice deformation. The neutrino detectors will provide additional information on ice deformation. We will establish new constitutive equations for ice flow, and verify high-resolution higher-order and full Stokes models with the measured deformation rates in IceCube. Besides the IceCube setup, the ice flow of a local Antarctic ice dome and grounding line region will be investigated, for which detailed data on ice thickness, surface elevation, mass balance, surface velocity and internal layers from radar measurements are available.

The successful candidate will contribute to the refinement of an existing higher-order and full Stokes model and use assimilation techniques based on the detailed amount of data to reconstruct the parameters needed. Other
approximations to the Stokes equations (such as ice stream models and shallow-ice models) will be investigated as well, so as to define the complexity needed to cope with different ice flow systems. Results will lay out the basis for next-generation ice sheet models. The candidate will also work closely together with other partners of the project.

The desired qualifications are a PhD in glaciology, geophysics, or an equivalent geoscience, with good programming skills in a C and Matlab environment. Knowledge on assimilation techniques is desirable. The position is for a period of 3 years (and extendable to 4) and will start as soon as possible (preferably June-July).

Applicants should email a cover letter and Curriculum Vitae at the address below. Review of the applications will begin 20 April and will continue until the position is filled.
