Ice and Snow Scientist - Remote Sensing
The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) in Tromsø, Norway, invites applications for a permanent position as research scientist in remote sensing of the cryosphere.
The successful applicant will apply remote sensing techniques to current research problems in the polar cryosphere, in such areas as sea ice (e.g. extent, concentration, type classification, thickness, dynamics); glaciers and ice sheets (e.g. extent, mass balance, surface elevation changes, ice velocity); and calibration/validation studies of remote sensing data from both existing and upcoming satellite sensors (e.g. CryoSat-2). Currently, our main research areas are: the Arctic Ocean (the Greenland Sea, the Barents Sea and the Fram Strait), Svalbard, Antarctica (Dronning Maud Land, the ice shelf Fimbulisen and parts of the Southern Ocean). The candidate can be expected to participate in polar research cruises and fieldwork.
Qualifications
The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in remote sensing and its applications to the cryosphere. We are seeking a candidate who is a team worker yet can conduct independent research, will publish in international journals and seek external funding.
The salary will commensurate with the qualifications of the successful candidate, according to the Norwegian State salary code 1109 - 1183, scale 57 - 68 (NOK 435.500 - 533.300).
The work place is the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø, Norway. The position is open, and the successful candidate should be able to start as soon as possible.
