Dr. Joseph D. Ortiz seeks motivated students to pursue the M.S. or Ph.D. working on projects related to the reconstruction of Arctic paleoclimate history using terrestrial and marine sedimentary archives. This work will be conducted as part of his active NSF-funded collaboration with researchers in the Healy Oden Transarctic Expedition (HOTRAX) and departmentally funded research with the Department of Geology and Planetary Science at the University of Pittsburg. Dr. Ortiz employs non-invasive sediment measurement techniques including: VIS/nIR diffuse spectral reflectance, XRF, and magnetic susceptibility, along with micropaleontology of planktic and benthic foraminifera as tools to reconstruct sediment physical properties, mineralogy and ocean production as proxies for climate change during the Pleistocene to Recent. Students with backgrounds in Earth Science, Geology, or Oceanography are encouraged to apply.
