3 year post-doctoral position available investigating Greenland icedynamics
15-Oct-2008
We seek a Post-doctoral research fellow for a three year NERC-funded project to investigate the influence of climate on the hydrology and dynamic stability of Greenland's outlet glaciers. The project will be based at the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh, Scotland. Please see full description below, and contact Douglas Mair ( Este endereço de e-mail está protegido contra spam bots, pelo que o JavaScript terá de estar activado para que possa visualizar o endereço de e-mail ) and/or Pete Nienow ( Este endereço de e-mail está protegido contra spam bots, pelo que o JavaScript terá de estar activado para que possa visualizar o endereço de e-mail ) for more information.

Application details at:

Closing date: 27 October 2008

The Research Fellow will be a key member of a team quantifying the effect of surface generated melt-water fluctuations on ice motion at the margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). The project will provide detailed field data to characterise the coupling between surface meltwater and ice dynamics and its temporal and spatial evolution over the course of a year. The field experiments, in conjunction with remotely sensed data, will focus on two flow-parallel transects at the western margin of the GrIS in adjacent land and marine terminating catchments. The Research Fellow will be responsible for data collection (May-August 2009 and 2010) and analyses to investigate supra-, sub- and proglacial hydrology and ice dynamics at a range of temporal scales. Motion characteristics will be compared with hydrological results to determine whether and how basal hydrology exerts control on variations in ice motion. The output from this project will be used, in collaboration with project partners, to improve modelling predictions of the GrIS's response to climate change.

Applicants should have a PhD, preferably in glaciology, geophysics, or similar discipline, and ideally with post-doctoral research experience. The research fellow will be expected to display excellence in coordinating and undertaking extended periods of glaciological fieldwork in a demanding environment. Proficiency in the processing of remote sensing data sets and in the use of Geographical Information Systems would be advantageous. The research fellow will work closely with the project investigators, project partners and post-graduate students both during fieldwork and in Aberdeen and Edinburgh and should have good interpersonal and communication skills.

This post is funded by NERC and is available for a period of 36 months
