Post-Doctoral Fellow in the framework of the ANR NEEM-France Project.
Laboratoire de Glaciologie et Géophysique de l'Environnement, CNRS-UJF, Grenoble, France
Applications are invited for a one year postdoctoral research position in numerical simulations of anisotropic ice flow in the vicinity of the NEEM drilling site (Greenland) at the Laboratory of Glaciology of Grenoble, France. The position is available for one year and can start at the early beginning of 2009.
The successful candidate will participate to the project NEEM-France, coordinated by Dr. V. Masson-Delmotte and funded by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche, which is the french contribution to the international NEEM project. The NEEM project (http://neem.ku.dk/) aims at obtaining a continuous climate record spanning the full last interglacial period through a new deep ice core in north west Greenland.
In this context, the successful candidate will work on the modelling of the flow of anisotropic ice in the vicinity of the NEEM drilling site, using the finite-element code Elmer (CSC). The aim of this modelling is a better understanding of the flow conditions in this area to improve the dating of the core.
The LGGE has developed an anisotropic ice flow model which take into account the strain-induced development of fabric in polar ice and the resulting anisotropic behavior of polycrystalline ice. This model has already been applied in the vicinity of the EPICA drilling site (Antarctica). The aim of this postdoctoral position is to improve our knowledge of the flow in the NEEM area and more particularly to quantify the effect of the anisotropy on the strengthening of the ice layer with depth.
