Ice flow modelling of blue ice areas in Antarctica and general modelling / statistical analysis of climate-related time series.
The candidate should have a strong background experience (Masters) in a numerate discipline, and ideally experienced in modelling applied to glaciological data. We use Matlab on PCs and ELMER-ICE finite element software on remote supercomputers. Field work in Antarctica is possible in 2009/10 but cannot be guaranteed at present. The Phd research focuses on the evolution of a blue ice area in Dronning Maud Land since the Last Glacial Maximum, especially in regard to a surface transect that was high-resolution sampled and dated recently in collaboration between our own group and international contacts. Exploration of wider climate issues and datasets is encouraged and close working with other members in our group is expected. Examples of our on-going research include global sea level analysis and projection, ice dynamics and chemistry of Svalbard ice caps, and business adaptation to climate change in Lapland.
Details of the research group can be found here http://www.ulapland.fi/home/hkunta/jmoore/johnpage.htm.
Standard Finnish PhD salary and conditions apply (dependent on age and experience). Funding from Finnish Academy beginning January 2009. Working location can be either Rovaniemi (Arctic Centre) or Oulu University (Thule Institute).
Apply by CV and cover letter by December 1 2008 to jmoore AT ulapland.fi.
