Major Duties: As a Physical Scientist within the Cryospheric Science Program, emphasis will be placed on leading the implementation of a program which supports 1) the development, validation and use of remote sensing technique for studying ice-covered regions of the planet, (2) the development of Earth system model components that simulate the behavior of the ice-covered regions of the Earth and their physical interaction with the broader climate system, including the incorporation of cryospheric models into climate models and data assimilation systems; (3) the integration of remote sensing studies of the cryosphere with in situ observations, (4) the development of basic knowledge that improves our understanding of the Earth's cryosphere and its coupling to the Earth's atmosphere and oceans.

At the full performance level the individual will perform duties such as:

• Serve as an expert and leading authority in overall program definition, organization, management, and direction in the area of environmental observations (airborne and space-based), numerical modeling, data analysis and utilization which are essential to the discipline of cryospheric science.

•Establish priorities and allocate resources to meet objectives.

•Manage center and university projects and assess results.

•Develop solicitations for and lead the evaluation of research proposals submitted from U.S. and foreign industries, governments and academia.

•Initiate and monitors research contracts, grants and cooperative agreements with external organizations

•Coordinate NASA’s programs in cryospheric science with those of its interagency and international partners, and represent NASA and the cryospheric science community in a range of government and scientific bodies

•Prepare written material for and prepare and/or make presentations about the Cryospheric Science program to NASA management, the scientific community, and NASA’s sponsors and stakeholders

•Generate policy recommendations, interventions and agency mechanisms in order to initiate research activities to support sustainable development within the physical science research area.
