Post-doctoral researcher - Glaciology - Innsbruck
14-May-2008
Job vacancy Univ. Innsbruck
***************************

The Tropical Glaciology Group at the University of Innsbruck, Austria,
invites applications for a full-time climate modeler position which will
be available for four years, starting as soon as possible. In our group we
investigate glaciers at low latitudes and their roles as indicators of
climate change in the tropical mid-troposphere and as fresh water
resources - which involves a diverse methodology ranging from direct
field measurements to multiscale modeling (glacier mass balance,
atmospheric, and climate models).

We seek an individual to join our team who will be responsible for
regional climate modeling in the tropics. The particular scientific goal
will be the dynamical downscaling of coarse gridded data to the
complex mountain environments where tropical glaciers are located.
This requires the ability to run a regional climate model on our
university’s supercomputers, and to analyze large data sets.
Participation in field trips (current research sites are in the Cordillera
Blanca, Peru, on Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, and in the Italian Alps) is
possible but not a must. The successful candidate will directly work
with Georg Kaser and his team (see link below). Contribution to
academic teaching and administration is expected to a limited extent.

Administratively, he/she will be at the Department of
Geosciences/Atmospheric Sciences, which consists of four institutes
(geography, geology, mineralogy, meteorology and geophysics). The
department’s facilities are situated in the center of Innsbruck, which is
located in the heart of the Austrian Alps: <www.innsbruck.at>

Candidates must have (1) a doctoral degree in earth or atmospheric
sciences (or physics), (2) profound experience in regional or global
climate modeling (including knowledge of Linux and one of the popular
programming languages), and (3) excellent organizational and interpersonal
communication skills for team work. English fluency is
also required for presenting work on international conferences and
writing peer-reviewed publications as well as project proposals. German
language knowledge is not required for this position, but certainly
helpful outside the campus. Candidates who additionally have a
background in glaciology are particularly encouraged to apply.

publications) until early June to:
